HOMES ARE SCARCE! SHELTERS ARE OVER-FULL especially in these hard economic times and especially for adult cats. So we urge you to try and solve the problem before giving up your cat/s. He/she will most likely end up living a very lonely life or no life at all as will most likely be euthanized. If you are moving, see the links on this page for Pet Friendly Housing.

Websites For Fostering Pets Whose Owners In Military:
TO ADOPT OUT "HOME TO HOME" VIA OUR WEBSITE
Please send us a digital photo, jpeg format, to forgottenfelines@yahoo.com. Please include physical description (name, age, sex, color, shorthair or longhair, spayed-neutered or not, declawed or not, indoor only or indoor-outdoor, etc) along with personality (including whether gets along with children, dogs, other cats etc. Tell us if he/she has been tested for feline leukemia and whether has had their vaccinations or not and include your contact info and we will put the cats/kittens up on our website as a referral and try to adopt from home to home.
If you do not have access to a digital camera, you can send me regular photos to scan onto our website- email me at forgottenfelines@yahoo.com for the address to send the photo/s. Or I can put the cat/s up without a photo but adoption chances are much better is there is a photo for prospective adoptors to look at.
We will also forward your email to our rescue alert system as soon as you send us this information if you wish.
Email us at forgottenfelines@yahoo.com for our questionairre for screening potential adoptors so your cat/s will be placed in a responsible caring home. Make sure you charge an adoption fee of at least $50 per cat and check the vet reference. This is extremely important to weed out irresponsible owners, collectors, those who sell to laboratories, and those who use the cat for fighting “dog bait.” You can use this money to recoup your vet expenses or mail it to Forgotten Felines, PO Box 430, Valhalla NY 10595 as a donation as our kitties could use the help with vet expenses and we will be able to find homes for more kitties left homeless in these hard economic times.
If you are moving to a no pets allowed building: the landlord will not know that you have cats if you sneak them into your new place in a carrier with a blanket etc draped over it and keep them from any window where they may be seen. This will give you time to place your cat/s into responsible homes. If you bring them to a shelter, they most likely will be euthanized as most are overcrowded.
If your cat/s are being placed because of BEHAVIORAL PROBLEMS, Moving, Allergies etc, see the section below: Maybe Rehoming Isn't Necessary. These links will help in solving your kitty's behavior problem and even a link to a Cat Behaviorist. In today's hard economic climate, the chances of your kitty being adopted with a behavioral problem is low and most likely will be euthanized if given up to a shelter and rescues groups do not have room to take in "unadoptable cats."
INDOOR-OUTDOOR kitties have to be indoors for about 4 weeks before letting out or will become disoriented and disappear and they have to be spayed-neutered first. They would require an area safe from traffic, coyotes, foxes, etc and be in at night. The initial letting out should only be in warmer weather in case he hides at first and only under supervision until he is comfortable with his outdoor surroundings.
Please also view the other links on our KITTY INFO page such as Allergy Help, Assistance with pet food, Pet friendly housing, etc
Please let us know when your pet has found a new home so we can update our website. Otherwise we will keep the pet up for 1 month and then delete the entry if we haven’t heard from you to the contrary.
IF YOU ARE TRYING TO PLACE KITTENS, SEE SECTION BELOW
If you are ADOPTING OUT SOCIALIZED (tame) KITTENS:
See the above section on how to send us a photo and their info so we can put them on our website as referrals.
Be sure to email us at forgottenfelines@yahoo.com for our adoption questionairre with answers before adopting out your kittens.
Charging an minimum adoption fee of $50 per kitten will help weed out undesirables & help cover your costs. Or you could donate this fee to Forgotten Felines, PO Box 430 Valhalla NY 10595 to help us vet other kittens so they can go on to forever homes.
Give them our website http://forgottenfelines.petfinder.org and tell them to click on the Kitty Info page for low cost spay-neuter clinics in their area. Or go to on http://www.animal-link.org and click on Services. The Animal Welfare League or the Simpson Clinic in Briarcliff or TEAM in CT are the best for low cost spay/neuters and vaccinations in our immediate area. Impress upon them that kittens should be spayed or neutered by 5 months of age. Female kittens can come into heat and get pregnant as early as 4 months of age. Male cats can start spraying at this time which is then a hard habit to break.
Ideally, kittens should have their first distemper vaccination and first worming before being adopted out. It would be prudent to have the kitty/s tested for feline leukemia at this time if he/she has never been tested. (If there is a litter of kittens, testing the mom only is cost effective).
IF YOU ARE TRYING TO PLACE FERAL (untamed) KITTENS
Forgotten Felines can help you place these kittens once they are tamed.
Hopefully you or a friend, neighbor or relative can find a space in your home or garage, storeroom, shed etc, and foster them until they are ready for adoption at 8 weeks of age. Kittens have to be handled by humans within the first 6-8 weeks of life, the younger the better, or they will become feral (wild) and unadoptable.
There are many links on our website on our Kitty Info Page under Feral Cat Help and Feral Kitten Help with advice on how to do this.
Then refer to the section on How To Place Socialized Kittens.
If the MOM IS PRESENT, she will most likely take longer especially if she is shy. She will have to be spayed first in a couple of weeks after finished nursing and her milk is dried up & given a rabies vaccination. Nursing mothers can also become pregnant! They should be spayed 2 weeks after the kittens are weaned and eating on their own.
If the moom is semi-feral or feral she will have to be spayed first, given a rabies vaccination, and put back with an outdoor shelter and someone to feed/water her. Please visit our Kitty Info page by clicking on the above link or going thru our website at http://forgottenfelines.petfinder.org and clicking on the Kitty Info page. Also use the Feral Cat Help links on our Kitty Info page.
Contact Best Friends at animalhelp@bestfriends.org or info@bestfriends.org OR call (435) 644-3965 ext 4800 to see if they have any suggestions.
You can post ads for your kitty at www.Petfinder.com at no charge. Do NOT say "free to a good home." This just invites trouble, there are people with less than reputable agendas out there. Always require an adoption fee to rule out the undesirables and check vet reference whenever possible. Here you can also look under STATE for no kill rescue organizations near you who may be able to help.
You can also view a list of organizations nearest you on www.pets911.com by entering your zip code. In addition, you can register the cat/s you wish to place on this website.
Go to Best Friends Website (www.bestfriends.org) to read about How to Find Homes for Homeless Pets (http://www.bestfriends.org/nomorehomelesspets/pdf/howtofindhomesforpets.pdf). They will even teach you how to screen your potential adopters. Email info@bestfriends.org for info on what organization or volunteer may be able to help in your area.
FINDING RESCUES-SHELTERS VIA ZIP CODES
Some local organizations that may be able to help are: Paws For Love 914-737-9135 www.PAWS4love.org; Community Cats at http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/NY611.html or 914 234-4209 or communitycats@yahoo.com; Putnam Felines 845-528-0015; Little Orphan Animals 914 734-2989; www.littleorphananimals.freehosting.net; Cause for Claws 845-216-5822; Cat Assistance http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/NY24.html or 914-667-7877. The SPCA in Briarcliff in Westchester County is not recommended at this time.
Having the cat/s spayed-neutered increases their chance of a quicker home adoption. It would be prudent to have the kitty/s tested for feline leukemia at this time if he/she has never been tested. If your cat/s need to be altered before placing, the best place to contact regarding spay/neuter in the Westchester-Putnam area is the Animal Welfare League tel # 914-948-2094 or the Simpson spay neuter clinic in Briarcliff at 914-762-4842. In CT, you can contact TEAM to make an appt for low cost spay/neuter by clicking on the underlined link.
